Abels Moving Services: US Senate Bill would suspend 100 per cent scanning deadline for containers: April 2011
The battle over 100 percent scanning of U.S. – bound ocean containers is taking another sharp turn in a partisan skirmish over maritime security. 
A bill to reauthorize the 2006 SAFE Port Act includes a provision that would suspend the July 2012 deadline for scanning all containers before they board a U.S.-bound vessel. Its sponsors, Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., authors of the original SAFE Port Act, filed a similar reauthorization last year, but it died at the end of the congressional session.

John Mason International: New customs regulations in Argentina: April 2011
Additional customs regulations have now been introduced in Argentina. Last year, the Customs Agency in Argentina created a new operating control system for shipments being exported from Argentina. This new regulation has now been extended to cover imports, therefore shipments from the UK to Argentina will be affected by this. 
All import and export applications will be x-ray scanned (in the case of a scanner not being available, narcotics detection dogs will be used instead. The container must be downloaded for this process).

Pickfords: Move to support NSPC: March 2011
From this month Pickfords, the UK’s leading removals and storage company, will be printing the NSPCC’s Helpline number on the 1.2 million cartons used each year when Pickfords’ customers move home. 
Pickfords will add the NSPCC Helpline number to its removal boxes, to remind as many people as possible that wherever they live, if they have concerns about the safety and welfare of a child, they can contact the free and confidential Helpline on 0808 800 5000, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Last year over 68,000 people contacted the NSPCC Helpline either by phone or email.

John Mason International: Vancouver voted most liveable city in the world: March 2010
The most recent Global Liveability Report has been published by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) which may be of interest to anyone planing an International Relocation. Vancouver, Canada has retained the title of ‘Most Liveable City’ for the fifth year running. There has been a change in the top ten rankings: Vienna now has a slightly lower score than in previous years, meaning that Melbourne, Australia has now moved to second place in the table. V
ancouver scored highly in all five categories (Infrastructure, Education, Healthcare, Stability, Environment and Culture), with a total score of 98%. The only minor problem in Vancouver is petty crime which is common in the majority of large cities. The area recently benefited from a boost to infrastructure due to the hosting of the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. Vancouver, which is British Columbia’s largest city, is also a popular travel destination and is often voted as one of the best places to visit in Canada.

BAR Overseas Group: Freight rates increase from March 1: March 2011
Every year the shipping lines independently review their rates and adjust them in accordance with market conditions.  Over the last few years there had been very little change in ocean freight rates.  This year has seen an increase on most major routes and these became effective on 1 March 2011.  This increase applies to all commodities and is not limited to household furniture.  Your chosen removal company will be able to advise you of any impact this may have on recent pricing and you should contact them directly.  The BAR is not involved in pricing, and only offers this information as confirmation of a general price increase by shipping lines.

Pickfords roll out BAR/OFT logo across entire fleet: November 2010
In October, Pickfords further embraced its support of the British Association of Removers by applying the BAR and OFT logo to the back doors of its national fleet. 
Pickfords is the largest member of the British Association of Removals and is one of its longest standing members.   For many years the company has used the BAR/OFT logo in its marketing materials including its Yellow Pages adverts, website and sales brochures but has always stopped short of displaying the BAR logo on its vehicles.
